Supporters react as Danny Mills cluelessly plays down size of south coast derby

Southampton travel to Fratton Park to take on local rivals Portsmouth tonight in a south coast derby which has caught the imagination of so many people in the area.

There is a genuinely spiky rivalry between the sides and their contrasting fortunes in recent years has kept them apart. But pundit Danny Mills was, for some reason, keen to play the game down.

He : “Look at some of the big derbies around the world, then you go Hampshire. It doesn’t stand out as one of the nastiest. Nice little derby down in Hampshire. I get that it’s a big derby in Hampshire, but where on the list does Portsmouth v Southampton come?

“At least on page seven. If I’m going round the world, it’s page seven or eight. I’m not having it.”

You’d hope that Mills is just looking for a reaction, but he seems to genuinely believe what he’s saying and many supporters took to Twitter to lay into him for his comments.

Tonight’s match is massive for both sets of fans and the atmosphere at Fratton Park is going to be electric. Mills might do well to pay it some attention…
