‘Superstar’ Cole Palmer is in ‘same bracket’ as 110-goal Chelsea legend, says former coach

Cole Palmer has received high praise from a former Chelsea coach amid his superb showings in recent months.

Chelsea became Club World Cup champions last weekend, seeing off European powerhouse PSG in the final.

Cole Palmer was the star of the show, scoring twice and assisting one to ensure the Blues secured an £85m prize pot.

After his dazzling display, Palmer earned high praise from Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker, the latter of whom said the England international left the stadium stunned by something he did in the showpiece.

Meanwhile, Palmer has also come in for praise from a former Chelsea coach.

Jody Morris puts Cole Palmer in same bracket as Chelsea legend

Chelsea had a mixed 2024/25 Premier League season, but they did win the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup.

Palmer had key roles in both of those trophies heading back to Stamford Bridge, and Jody Morris has now been heaping praise on the Englishman.

Reflecting on his recent performances, Morris, who spent time in West London as a player and coach, said the 23-year-old is in the ‘same bracket’ as Eden Hazard.

He stated: “It doesn’t matter where he plays, if it’s on the right, we see what he’s done on the right-hand side in the Conference League final. He took it upon himself to go right, I’m going to make something happen.

“There are few players that can do that. We were lucky enough to have probably the best at ever doing that in Eden Hazard, Cole Palmer’s in that same bracket.”

Morris went on to label Palmer a superstar and backed him to reach a new level.

He continued: “For me he’s a superstar already, but I still think the fact that we’re going to be playing in the Champions League, the fact that I think we’re going to be an improved Chelsea next season, and hopefully challenging or at least putting more pressure higher up the table, I think he’s got another level to go to because I think you need to play in the Champions League for you to be considered the next level.

“Conference League doesn’t do it, that competition is not worth people talking about Cole Palmer being a superstar, playing in the Champions League is.”

Cole Palmer Chelsea stats vs Eden Hazard

Hazard made the move to Chelsea from Lille back in 2012, going on to enjoy a prolific career.

He helped the Blues win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup and two Europa Leagues.

In total, Hazard made 352 appearances across all competitions, scoring 110 goals and assisting 88.

Palmer has so far featured 97 times for Chelsea, scoring 43 and assisting 29.

He is under contract until 2033, however, so there’s still plenty of time for him to overtake Hazard on the stat and trophy front.
