‘Superb news’: These Celtic fans respond with delight to club’s update on defender
Celtic supporters have reacted with unanimous delight to confirmation of Stephen Welsh’s new contract.
There hasn’t been much for supporters to shout about this season, but the emergence of Welsh in the first-team squad has been one significant positive.
The 21-year-old, who had a loan spell at Morton last season, has made nine appearances for the senior side and performed well on the majority of those occasions, including Europa League matches against Milan and Lille.
In an update posted on on Tuesday afternoon, Celtic confirmed that the defender has signed a new four-year contract which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2025.
Welsh has already spent a decade at Celtic Park having come up through their youth academy, and confirmation of his new deal has prompted widespread applause from Celtic fans.
Good to see another young lad through our Academy and into the first team. Has rarely put a foot wrong to be fair to him hopefully keeps improving 👍🏼🍀

Surprised this wasn't already done! Still not the finished article but similar to he's been on of the bright sparks this year. Excited to see what he can do under a new management team

Very pleased with this.
Welsh has proven himself to be a very reliable defender so far and hopefully continues to get game time no matter what signings are made in the Summer.
Just shows what happens when you give youth a chance to shine.

Been solid and consistent since coming into the starting 11. Lots of wins and clean sheets too. Good passer, solid in a tackle. ✅

I think Stephen Welsh has had 1 poor game in a Celtic jersey and that’s some feat in that current squad considering how bad this season has been. A shining light in a dire year. Well deserved for the young man. 👏🏼
