‘Superb’… John Collins left seriously impressed with ‘tremendous’ 24-year-old Celtic player’s composure vs Hibs
Celtic’s performance against Hibs last night was one of the poorest of the season. One of the only consolations that can be taken from it is that the team kept pushing and never gave up.
A last-minute penalty against the Easter Road side is what it took to grab all three points as Brendan Rodgers’ side put in another performance bereft of creativity and attacking threat.
However, former Celtic player, John Collins, has said that he was seriously impressed with one player’s performance against the capital club.
Stephen Welsh got the nod to start against Nick Montgomery’s men and before he was subbed in the second half, Collins was waxing lyrical about the 24-year-old defender.
Collins said [], “It tremendous composure from Welsh.
“The ball’s played in and the whole stadium’s thinking ‘Oh be careful’ but he’s had the intelligence to know that the Hibs player’s on his left-hand side, he’s turned, and taking in on his right.
“Superb.”
Indeed, this was when Welsh was being pressed high up the pitch and he cutely nicked the ball past a Hibs attacker to avert any danger.
Welsh’s start to the season has been seriously hampered by injury. An ankle ligament injury at the start of the season meant that the academy graduate missed the first few months of the campaign.

Getting a rare start last night, Welsh must be kicking himself after Rodgers revealed that he felt his hamstring tighten up at Easter Road.
The Celtic boss’s injury woes at the back have been a constant pain as injuries to Cameron Carter-Vickers and Greg Taylor had already forced Rodgers into making further changes to his starting defence over the past few games.
Fingers crossed the injury isn’t too bad and Welsh makes a recovery in time for the St Mirren game on Saturday.
