Sunderland will be punished if they repeat slackness shown in Barnsley victory
Sunderland hosted Barnsley last night in a huge promotion clash at the top of League One last night on a night of contrasting fortunes.
The Black Cats raced into a 3-0 lead after just 32 minutes thanks to goals from Aiden McGeady, Josh Maja and Lynden Gooch and it looked set to be an easy night’s work for Jack Ross’s side.
But complacency set in thereafter and the hosts allowed Kieffer Moore to cut the deficit before half time before he grabbed another just before the hour mark.
Substitute Luke O’Nien eventually made the game safe with just seven minutes remaining, but it was an evening’s work that was much more difficult than it needed to be.
That slackness did not cost Sunderland on this occasion, but if complacency continues to follow class, then they will end up being punished as the season wears on.
That’s the task facing Ross; he must keep his side on task because if they can replicate that devastating first half spell on a regular basis this season, they will be bang on track for promotion.
If complacency sets in, that promotion bid could be undermined and made tougher than it needs to be.
