Sunderland should try a loan swoop for Leeds United’s left-back talent Leif Davis

Sunderland are still on the hunt for new players, with the loan window at League One clubs not due to shut until next month. 

One area where they still need to improve is at left-back. 

Sunderland boss Jack Ross earlier this month that a new left-back was necessary this summer.

Bryan Oviedo and Reece James both left the club this summer and Denver Hume has struggled in the role so far this season. Right-back Connor McLaughlin is currently playing out of position to plug the gap.

One player that was in Sunderland’s sights was Tom Pearce.on deadline day, the Black Cats made an approach for the Leeds United full-back. 

Unfortunately, they missed out. Pearce instead joined Wigan Athletic in a deal reported by Wigan Today to be in the region of £300,000. 

But should Sunderland again look at Leeds for their left-back solution?

Leif Davis is one of the reasons why Leeds were willing to sell Pearce in the first place. The former Morecambe left-back impressed at Thorp Arch this season and recently featured in the EFL Cup win over Salford City. 

Capable at both left and centre-back, the 19-year-old from Newcastle would surely relish the chance to return to the north-east to play regular first-team football. Even if it isn’t in black-and-white.

Leeds were without Barry Douglas for last night’s clash with Brentford and Gjanni Alioski played in his place. With Stuart Dallas also capable in the role it appears Davis is fourth in line.

Whilst he could play the whole of the current campaign with the Leeds United under-23s and occasionally make cup appearances, it would surely be beneficial for him to take part in a promotion battle with Sunderland. 

Sunderland should certainly have the teenager on their radar if they are on the hunt for an affordable loanee before the end of the season.
