Sunderland manager Jack Ross confirms Aiden McGeady and Max Power could miss start of season

that two key players could miss the start of the season. Ross has revealed that Aiden McGeady and Max Power are not training with the squad during pre-season because of injuries.

And both players will struggle to return before the start of the 2019/20 season. This is a worrying blow for Sunderland ahead of their promotion bid next season.

McGeady missed the start of last season and he faces a battle against time to start this season. The 33-year-old, who scored 14 goals last season, is struggling with a fractured bone in his foot sustained in April.

: “Aiden will hopefully be able to train at some point in pre-season but at the moment he is still a couple of weeks away from joining in full training. He’ll miss Thursday and Saturday.

“The earliest he could potentially be involved would be Portugal but even then, it might be too soon.  Aiden didn’t play until September last year. Hopefully he’ll be back sooner than last season and even that would be a bonus.”

Power could also miss the start of the 2019/20 season. The tough-tackling 25-year-old has been struggling with an ankle injury sustained during the play-off final loss to Charlton Athletic.

: “Max Power will probably struggle to make the start of the season. He got quite a nasty injury actually, an ankle injury that takes quite a long time to heal.

“Max is in really good condition and looks after himself really well, it’s just that the injury takes time to settle. He’s possibly another three or four weeks away.”

Double blow for Sunderland

This is a big blow for Sunderland’s hopes of a fast start in League One. The Black Cats were disappointed to miss out on automatic promotion last season and this was compounded by a play-off final loss.

Both Power and McGeady played pivotal roles in helping Sunderland compete for promotion and both are expected to feature heavily next term. Without their starting holding midfielder and goalscoring winger, other Sunderland squad players need to step up and be counted.
