Sunderland’s unbeaten record in League One has come to an end at the hands of in-form Peterborough United.
The Black Cats were defeated 3-0 by The Posh and the home side were good value for their win. Sunderland also saw two men sent off, with Luke O’Nien and Charlie Wyke receiving marching orders, in an overall bad day at the office for Jack Ross’ side.
To make matters worse, the man who masterminded their defeat was a player Sunderland could have reportedly signed this summer.
Marcus Maddison scored twice as the Peterborough ran away with the game amid a week in which it was claimed he was offered to Sunderland this summer.
Posh chairman Darragh McAnthony that the Sunderland fan was offered to the club. However, Sunderland did not make a move for the player, as his £2.5 million asking price was considered too high.
Maddison is out of contract in 2020 and Peterborough were looking to cash in on the player rather than lose him on the cheap next year.
Sunderland were of course right not to make a move for Maddison if, financially, a deal dod not make sense. But it will certainly hurt more that a player consistently linked with a move to the Stadium of Light put the Black Cats to the sword yesterday.
But, as stated, his contract runs out in the summer, so perhaps Sunderland can revisit the interest then.
