Sunderland defeat compounded by the fact Jack Ross reportedly wanted to sign Jason Cummings
Sunderland lost in League One yesterday as their inconsistent start to life under new boss Phil Parkinson continued. Coming into the game off the back of a 5-0 thrashing of Tranmere Rovers expectation was high that Sunderland could again pick up three points at Shrewsbury Town.
Instead, they lost 1-0 and have now dropped to eighth in the table, eight points behind the current top two Ipswich Town and Wycombe Wanderers.
The result will not be helped by the fact the Shrewsbury goalscorer was a player Sunderland reportedly tried to sign last year.
Jason Cummings scored the winning goal and was initially on the radar of former boss Jack Ross last summer, He knew of Cummings’ goalscoring antics in Scottish football and the player was available after failing to make the mark at Nottingham Forest.
In the end, Cummings headed to League One rivals Peterborough United as a replacement for Derby-bound Jack Marriott.
Sunderland’s hunt for goals since has been well-publicised and Will Grigg again failed to produce the goods at the New Meadow yesterday.
Meanwhile, the former Ross target scored his third goal in seven games as Shrewsbury close in on Sunderland in the League One table.
