Sunderland boss Ross offers positive update on McGeady’s play-off final prospects

Sunderland manager Jack Ross said key man Aiden McGeady has a chance of being fit for Sunday’s League One play-off final,

McGeady missed both legs of the 1-0 semi-final aggregate win over Portsmouth and has actually not played in any of Sunderland’s past four matches.

But Ross : “He has a chance. The two week break he had since being unavailable for the first leg against Portsmouth has helped him. We’ve spoken of his need for a prolonged rest period.

“He won’t get that until the summer but this period of rest has come at a good time for him. We’ll be building up his workload as the week goes on and he has a chance of being involved. We’ll make a sensible decision and give him every chance.”

Sunderland made it to the final with two battling performances which were high on workrate but low on stardust.

That did the job, but at Wembley on Sunday, they may need a sprinkling of McGeady’s magic, after a season in which his attitude has finally matched his talent and he has been something of a talisman for Ross’s side.

Even if it’s off the bench, having McGeady on will boost Sunderland and frighten Charlton – which could make all the difference with the stakes so high.
