Sunderland boss hails Jack Clarke’s performances since leaving Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur decided to sell Jack Clarke to Sunderland this summer, and Tony Mowbray is showering praises on him following his fantastic start to the season.

Clarke was once one of the finest talents in the country. When he was at Leeds, everyone believed he’d go on and become a star at a top club, but his time at Spurs wasn’t great at all.

Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray praises Jack Clarke’s performances

Tottenham signed Clarke from Leeds in 2019, but he never quite lived up to all the hype. He only secured 96 minutes of senior football at Spurs and was loaned out four different times – the last of which was to Sunderland in the second half of last season.

The Black Cats made that move permanent this summer, and Clarke has been sensational for them since the start of the campaign. He has scored three goals and provided four assists in 10 games in the Championship, which is a very impressive return for a 21-year-old.

Mowbray is absolutely delighted to have him, and he has been singing praises of the Englishman.

He said, as per : “I know inconsistency is part of being a young footballer from my own experience, and you have battles in your own head about trying to be consistent.

“I played my best football after 30 because I knew my body, understood the game and speed of it, where I needed to put people. Young players, it’s more off the cuff and Jack falls into that category. What a wonderful talent he is.

“The first half at Reading for example he frustrated me a bit, he couldn’t get on the ball as much as he’d have liked, and he doesn’t really have those double movements yet, to run away and come back to buy some space, to come short and then spin away when the defender comes tight, these are all the things he has to work on.

“What nobody can deny is the talent he has when the ball is at his feet, how fast his feet are and how wonderful a talent he is. And he’s a joy to work with because he’s a wonderfully happy-go-lucky kid. There are times I’d like him to be a bit more serious but that’s because he really is a diamond of a lad, we all love him.”

It really is good to see Clark playing well.

The youngster was electric for Leeds, so much so that he caught Marcelo Bielsa’s eye. The legendary Argentine used him 28 times in all competitions, most of which came in the 2018/19 campaign.

Things really fell apart for Clarke at Tottenham. Fans believed he’d get regular opportunities when Mauricio Pochettino was at the helm, but after he was shown the door, no Spurs manager was really keen to use him.

Tottenham got rid of him in the summer, and that was probably what Clarke needed to get his career back on track. He’s flying now and hopefully, he can carry that form until the end of the season and beyond.
