‘Suited to Scottish football’: Ex-Celtic favourite Johan Mjallby tips Rangers summer signing Filip Helander for big things
Johan Mjallby believes Filip Helander will be a success in Scotland. , ex-Celtic defender Mjallby believes Rangers summer signing Helander has all the qualities to be a hit at Ibrox.
Mjallby played for Celtic for six years between 1998 and 2004, racking up just shy of 200 appearances. He knows the Scottish game inside-out and he believes his fellow countryman Helander will be a success.
Helander joined Rangers from Bologna in the summer but he has struggled for game time. The Sweden international has played just three times for the Gers with Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson preferred in central defence.
Mjallby on Helander

Mjallby thinks that Helander will thrive when he gets his chance. The former Celtic centre-back said (): “He’s probably not the quickest but he’s steady, good in the air and decent on the ball without being really pacy. He needs to bide his time. Even if players are supposed to be top players they need time to get bedded in.
“Age-wise and mentality-wise he’s strong enough. He’s quite aggressive and he’ll definitely be suited to Scottish football. These days we all think central defenders should be like Manchester City’s but it’s all about being a proper defender – and Helander is.”
TBR’s view

Helander has taken Katic’s place in the Rangers defence for the last two games and he is starting to show what he can do. The towering Swede is a physical centre-half who should thrive in the Scottish Premiership.
This is a glowing reference from Mjallby – who will undoubtedly be one of Helander’s role models. If Helander can replicate Mjallby’s success in Scotland, Rangers will have a great player on their books.
