‘Such a great player’… Owen Hargreaves is a huge fan of 23-year-old Celtic star

Celtic’s disappointing loss to Lazio tonight only further compounds just how poor Brendan Rodgers’s side have been in the Champions League.

After Chris Sutton’s damning verdict, four losses and a draw ensures Celtic have nothing to play for when Feyenoord come visiting in early December.

However, despite the disappointment of tonight’s elimination from the Champions League, at least one player has left his mark on former Manchester United midfielder, Owen Hargreaves.

He was speaking at half-time when the scores were level and said Celtic had to do more to get Matt O’Riley more involved in the game.

Hargreaves said [], “I think Brendan would be happy with the possession, but offensively, they need a little bit more.

“They need to get more shots off. The wingers need to get into the game. I think Matt O’Riley is the one you want to see get the ball.

“He’s such a great player, but he hasn’t been able to get on the ball enough.”

Matt O’Riley wasn’t enough to save Celtic’s Champions League dream

The 23-year-old midfielder didn’t really get the opportunity to show his class for Celtic tonight. O’Riley, like the rest of the Celtic midfield, was bypassed in the first half as Lazio seemed to target the Hoops’ left flank.

The Danish international was snuffed out of the game and didn’t put his usual stamp on the midfield like the Celtic fans are used to seeing.

However, he wasn’t the poorest player on the pitch by any stretch of the imagination. In a night that promised so much, even though Celtic shaded the possession stats, they only had seven shots on goal compared to Lazio’s 22. []

One thing is for certain, if Celtic do win the Scottish Premiership this season they must invest heavily in the first-team lineup. Not the squad, first-team-ready players,

As they will gain automatic entry into the group stages again and they can ill afford to get embarrassed for the third year in a row.
