Stuart Pearce claims Man City star is hindering Arsenal player at Euro 2024

Stuart Pearce has offered up a reason as to why a current Arsenal star hasn’t been at his best at Euro 2024 and claimed a Manchester City player ‘has got to do more’ to help him.

Both Arsenal and Manchester City have a host of key stars at Euro 2024, with many of them representing England.

John Stones, Kyle Walker, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice have started in each of England’s four games in Germany.

It’s fair to say that Gareth Southgate’s side have underwhelmed so far and needed a last-minute Jude Bellingham overhead kick to avoid a shock last-16 exit at the hands of Slovakia.

Southgate threw caution to the wind in search of an equaliser as he introduced the likes of Cole Palmer, Ivan Toney and Eberechi Eze, which interestingly led to Saka returning to left-back.

The Arsenal star played in a wing-back position during the early stages of his career but has since established himself as one of the best right-wingers in Europe.

However, Saka is yet to score at the Euros after providing an assist in England’s opener against Serbia. And Stuart Pearce believes he needs more support from Walker down the right-hand side.

Pearce makes claim about Kyle Walker and Bukayo Saka at Euro 2024

Speaking on , the former Manchester City man admitted he sympathises with Saka due to a lack of support down the right-hand side.

“I feel sorry for Saka because I don’t think, and I have mentioned it many times on commentaries, Kyle Walker as a full-back is helping this boy out,” Pearce said.

“He has got to do more for him, he really has. I like Saka. I think he is an outstanding player, but unless you have got a distraction run from your full-back, your work is that much harder to try and get turned and face the opposition up.”

England vs Switzerland

All eyes will be on Southgate on Saturday as it’s clear the England boss needs to make a couple of changes to his side.

The left-hand side has been largely ineffective, with the Three Lions lacking balance with Kieran Trippier at left-back and Foden out wide.

But the right-hand side has arguably provided most of England’s threat in the final third.

Whether or not Southgate opts to move Saka to the left-hand side on Saturday remains to be seen, particularly with Cole Palmer impressing from the bench.

While Walker doesn’t carry a major threat in the final third, his defensive work is key for England and it’s difficult to see Southgate dropping the City star.
