In the summer Scotland international Stuart Armstrong decided it was time to try his luck elsewhere. With 12 months left on his deal, the midfielder made it clear he wanted to try a fresh challenge and head to English football.
In the end, Celtic were left with no choice but to oblige. signing a four-year deal at St Mary’s. It left Celtic fans disappointed to see the player go, but pleased they managed to cash in such an amount for his services.
Now, looking at his start to life on the South Coast, that fee is even more impressive from Celtic’s point of view.
Armstrong has hardly lit up the Premier League with his performances. He is struggling to get regular football with his new club and has not played a full 90 minutes for the Saints. In his eight Premier League appearances, he has failed to enjoy a win or produce anything telling.
Celtic could have used Armstrong recently. Injuries in the heart of midfield have made things tough for Brendan Rodgers. But looking at the performances of Callum McGregor and Ryan Christie it appears Celtic are managing to get by just fine without him.
