‘Strong’ £30m Newcastle midfield target would be solid Kalvin Phillips alternative

Newcastle United are in need of bolstering their midfield ranks in the January transfer window and there have been links with numerous players.

The Magpies have been heavily linked with Kalvin Phillips, but with Manchester City reportedly wanting a £7million loan fee, Newcastle don’t seem so keen.

According to an report, the 28-year-old is actually keen on linking up with the Magpies, but unless City drops their demands, Newcastle will likely look elsewhere.

Indeed, the outlet reported that Magpies head of recruitment Steve Nickson was in Italy over the weekend to watch a different target.

Apparently, he was at Atalanta’s defeat of Frosinone in Serie A to watch Brazilian midfielder Ederson.

The 24-year-old’s name has been doing the rounds on the Newcastle rumour mill of late.

As per the i Sport report, he has been drawing positive reviews and has a similar profile to Joelinton.

Meanwhile, South American football expert Tim Vickery has likened Ederson to another Newcastle midfielder, namely Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle United could be signing hidden gem in Ederson

We reckon Ederson would be a solid Phillips alternative for a number of reasons.

Firstly, he’s a great player and a potential hidden gem, one of many to emerge in Serie A in recent years.

The 24-year-old joined Italian club Salernitana from Brazil’s Corinthians in January 2022, and within six months, he was on the way to Bergamo for around .

Ederson has made 64 competitive appearances for Atalanta, also getting on the scoresheet seven times and registering two assists.

He’s proven at Serie A level and, at just 24, he’s got that good mix of experience and plenty of years ahead of him.

Ederson also seems to tick the boxes that Phillips ticks, as well as obviously drawing comparisons to Joelinton and Guimaraes.

Vickery said of Ederson on : “He’s a strong, well-built central midfielder. He’s strong on the ball, versatile, box-to-box and has a strong personality as well.

“I just wonder if all these virtues may remind you of another Brazilian already wearing the shirt of Newcastle.”

And then we have Ederson’s price tag. recently claimed that the Serie A outfit wants around €35million (around £30million) for their player.

So, £7million for a proven Premier League player, but only until the end of the season?

Or £30million for a Serie A-proven player who’s highly rated, four years younger, and would be on Newcastle’s books?

Let’s see what happens in the coming weeks. The Ederson lead certainly seems promising.
