Striker who failed at Everton is now in the form of his life after 11 goals in 14 games

Anyone looking to put a bet on an Everton striker scoring a hat-trick right now would be best advised opening up Google for reviews of asylums in their area.

Only one Toffee has plundered a Premier League treble since Wayne Rooney. And that – Dominic Calvert-Lewin vs West Brom in the heady days of Carlo Ancelotti and James Rodriguez – came about over four years ago now.

Calvert-Lewin and the purposeful-yet-profligate Beto have not even scored three goals between them all season, let alone in a single afternoon.

But while those currently at Sean Dyche’s disposal continue to fire blanks – Everton needed Jordan Pickford’s heroics against West Ham during a dull 0-0 draw on Saturday – a couple of ex-Toffees hitmen are finding goals a lot easier to come by away from Merseyside.

More than half of Tom Cannon’s seven Stoke City strikes came during his four-midable display against Portsmouth back in October. That was Cannon’s first senior treble.

And, as Fiorentina moved joint-top at the Serie A summit over the weekend, it was Moise Kean’s turn to end his wait for a senior hat-trick.

Former Everton striker Moise Kean in the form of his life at Fiorentina

After netting twice in a 5-1 obliteration of Roma – the Gialorossi now looking for their third coach of the season already – Kean then scored Fiorentina’s winner at Torino.

Now, taking his tally to 11 in just 14 games, one of European football’s most mercurial talents may just be about to realise his vast potential at long last with his 25th birthday now only a few months away.

“The hat-trick? These are the emotions of football,” Kean smiled after single-handedly firing Fiorentina past Hellas Verona, his third a scintillating solo effort after a lesser-spotted David de Gea assist.

“I’ve been looking for [a hat-trick] for a long time.”

Just to add to the almost permanent sense of frustration hanging around Everton, Kean is not even the only former Goodison Park benchwarmer performing at the peak of his powers in Italy.

Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman earned a Ballon D’Or nomination after firing La Dea to Europa League glory.

And while Kean will need more than a prolific couple of weeks in the purple of Fiorentina if he is to be recognised as one of the continent’s top forwards too, former Viola ace Antonio di Gennaro is not alone in suggesting that the one-time Juventus striker has overtaken the man currently leading the line for the Bianconeri.

Everton flop rated higher than Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic

“[Kean] is 24 years old, he must always unleash this strength that he has,” Di Gennaro tells . “Now, he is like a leader.

“In my opinion, Kean is stronger than [Juve’s £70 million man Dusan] Vlahovic. He has more shots.”

And more goals, too.

Vlahovic continues to be linked with Arsenal, though he trails Kean by two in the Serie A scoring charts with just six to his name.

“We must be more than satisfied,” adds Sauro Fattori, another Fiorentina alumni. “It’s a great moment that hasn’t been experienced for many years.

“I’ve been an admirer of [Kean’s] since day one, but I didn’t expect this! He shouldn’t be compared to Vlahovic. Kean is different from Vlahovic. He has a much greater impact on the team because he keeps the ball and makes his teammates play well.

“This Fiorentina plays to his strengths.”

Following another afternoon in which Calvert-Lewin was starved of service, and in which Beto offered little except trademark hustle and bustle off the bench, ‘playing to a striker’s strengths’ must feel like a rather novel concept at Everton these days.
