‘Still a threat’: Liverpool legend thankful for Real Madrid draw as he outlines path to final

It’s been a disastrous season for Liverpool on the domestic front, but there’s still an opportunity for them to end the campaign on a high.

Tuesday night sees Jurgen Klopp’s men resume their European journey with the first leg of their quarter-final against Real Madrid, whose captain and defensive stalwart is set to miss out after sustaining an injury on international duty on Spain.

Sir Kenny Dalglish won the competition three times in his playing days, and the Anfield legend believes that for all the history associated with Los Blancas, they represent a favourable draw for Liverpool.

At least one of Bayern Munich and PSG will be missing from the semi-final draw, and Klopp’s side also avoided a formidable Manchester City team that has run rampant in this season’s Premier League.

Dalglish is optimistic about Liverpool’s chances, and has drawn a link between this season’s tournament and a memorable night for the club in 2005.

Speaking on , Dalglish said: “Listen, they’re still a threat. They’re still a team to be proud of and a team that can go places.

“They’re still in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. When have you ever been happy drawing Real Madrid?

“You were happy to draw Real Madrid because you missed Bayern Munich, and you miss Man City.

“And those two get each other if they get through in the semi-final.

“If they can beat Real Madrid they can go all the way to the final.

“The final just happens to be in one of the greatest moments in Liverpool’s history, the Atatürk stadium in Istanbul.”
