Steven Gerrard was left ‘sad’ but losing Ovie Ejaria was blessing in disguise for Rangers
Back in December, Liverpool midfielder Ovie Ejaria decided to end his loan spell at Rangers early. It came after a period of poor form at Ibrox from the player, who had initially impressed under Steven Gerrard.
, the player was reportedly struggling with the ‘physicality’ of Scottish football.
Gerrard himself went on to state that he felt it was a mistake for Ejaria to leave Glasgow. Ejaria eventually moved on, joining Reading on loan until the end of the season.
“Am I disappointed he’s gone? Yes. Do I think it’s the right decision? No, because I think he had an incredible opportunity here.
“But I’m never going to stand in a player’s way who is not happy and who is not settled because I have people who are desperate to wear the shirt and who would run through brick walls to wear it.
“It is what it is. I have to accept the decision. I’m sad about it, I wish him all the best.”
Rangers, however, are not missing the England under-20 World Cup winner.
The club’s form since his departure has not greatly fluctuated. On top of that, Ejaria’s absence allowed Rangers to bring Ross McCrorie into a more prominent role. He has thrived since being given that role and Rangers’ performances have improved as a consequence.
The Ibrox faithful were never truly sold on Ejaria and, in truth, he is not exactly missed in Glasgow. The departure of a loan player has allowed Gerrard to give more minutes to an impressive young Rangers-owned player. That has to be seen as a positive for the club.
