‘Outstanding’: Steven Gerrard raves about value Tottenham and West Ham target’s display last night

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard says the performance of Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope was ‘outstanding’ last night.

Burnley earned a 1-1 draw against Villa at Villa Park to leave their survival hopes in their own hands going into the final day of the season.

The Clarets know if they beat Newcastle on Sunday, they will survive, no matter what result Leeds get against Brentford at the same time.

Gerrard told after the game how good he thought England international Pope was.

Gerrard says Pope was ‘outstanding’

Gerrard said: “I think honours are even because of Nick Pope.

“I thought he was outstanding. He made some really good saves.

“He’s managed to help his team get a point. He made a lot of saves, a lot of outstanding saves. He played well.”

Pope has been linked with an exit in the summer, and it seems that the chances of that happening would hinge on Burnley’s top flight status.

Pope wants a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup and if he is playing regularly in the Premier League with Burnley, he has every chance.

If they go down, he would likely need to move.

West Ham have been linked with a swoop, with current first choice Lukasz Fabianski getting on a bit at 37, although they have the option to buy Alphonse Areola.

Tottenham need a longer term replacement for Hugo Lloris, and have also been linked, but would Pope go somewhere he would likely be second choice next season?

For now, his focus has to be on Sunday’s huge game and another performance like last night’s would go a long way to getting the win.
