Where would the signing of Martin Skrtel leave Rangers defender Nikola Katic?

Steven Gerrard is reportedly trying to bolster his Rangers squad by making a third attempt to sign ex-Liverpool team-mate Martin Skrtel.

that the Slovakian is wanted by the Gers after failing to land him in the summer or in January.

It is thought that the 34-year-old will travel to Glasgow to discuss a contract with the club.

The Croatian played second fiddle for a large chunk of last season, with Gerrard preferring Joe Worrall alongside Connor Goldson instead.

With Worrall now back at Forest, it had been expected that the youngster would earn the chance to challenge for a place.

George Edmundson recently signed from Oldham; whilst Skrtel’s arrival could arguably shove Katic down to fourth choice central defender.

That won’t bode well for the 22-year-old and he could find himself facing another 12 months without much football.

With Gerrard desperate to land his ex-team-mate he will surely play. Goldson was a regular last season, whilst surely Edmundson wouldn’t have been pursued if he wasn’t going to play.

Despite arriving just a year ago, the future already looks bleak for Katic.

Skrtel’s arrival would be disastrous for the Croatia Under-21 international. The immediate challenge for Gerrard would be to work out how best to keep four central defenders satisfied.
