Steven Gerrard names the ‘excellent’ Rangers youngster who’s ‘going to surprise a few people’
Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has tipped Ibrox newcomer Calvin Bassey to “surprise a few people” in future ().
The Light Blues signed the 20-year-old – who can play at left-back and centre-back – earlier this month, paying Leicester City £230,000 in compensation.
It proved quite a coup for Rangers as Bassey was not only valued at £3million but also on the radar of West Ham and Bayer Leverkusen, according to the .

As it stands, the versatile defender is yet to make an appearance in professional football, but Gerrard is confident he can make his mark for Rangers soon.
Speaking to about Bassey, as quoted by the , Gerrard said: “Calvin is going to surprise a few people. Not many people know the name but we have tracked him for some time.
“We’ve watched him a lot and he’s a fantastic talent. He’s big, strong, quick and aggressive. He’s excellent in one v one situations.
“Calvin can play in two or three different positions and always has a smile on his face. He is your modern-day, powerful full-back.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how people take to him. I think when they’ve watched him quite a bit, they’ll be as excited as I am.”
TBR View:
While Bassey may seem like a somewhat unknown quantity at present, Rangers fans should be excited about him given Gerrard’s hugely complimentary comments, the price tag Leicester had on him, and reported interest from the club which has given the world Kai Havertz.
With Rangers losing the services of Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan, Gerrard needed to bring in a new deputy for Borna Barisic, and so there’s a very good chance we’ll see him soon, initially as a substitute or cup starter, but given his credentials and potential, who’s to say he can’t make that berth his own?
