Steven Gerrard issues Bukayo Saka verdict after Arsenal win vs Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard has lauded Bukayo Saka despite expressing some frustration at the Arsenal star asking for greater protection following the Gunners’ win over Aston Villa on Saturday, .

Saka scored the only goal at Villa Park as Mikel Arteta’s men continued to lay down the challenge for all of their top-four rivals in the Premier League. But his strike during the first-half was not the only talking point.

The Arsenal youngster was unhappy about some of the challenges he was on the receiving end of. In particular, there was one moment when he was caught by Tyrone Mings.

In fairness to Mings, he clearly got to the ball first. But his followthrough catches Saka on the ankle as the Arsenal starlet looks to block the ball.

The 20-year-old was seen talking to the referee at the end of the game. that he was not too happy with being kicked during the contest.

Gerrard has disputed the idea that Villa were too rough with Saka. He did highlight just how much admiration he had for the Arsenal man in reaction to his comments.

“It’s part of the game. The last time I checked it is not a no-contact sport,” he said, . “Tackles are allowed, physicality is allowed, aggression is allowed. He’s a good player, he’s an outstanding talent, I love him, but he can’t complain about that. That’s football.”

A look on social media will highlight a clear divide on this issue. Certainly, many Aston Villa fans do not see a problem with Mings’ challenge for example. Perhaps, he has a little less control after getting to the ball. But that seems to be overly critical.

Of course, Arsenal supporters have every right to worry about Saka. It would be naive to suggest that teams are not looking to keep him quiet. And with that, they have to come up with a strategy to limit his influence.

Saka is the jewel in the Arsenal crown. And thus, he is, unfortunately, going to have to be prepared for rougher treatment at times.
