Steven Gerrard has got to be on red alert, as Liverpool star’s price tag drops again
Liverpool will now reportedly consider offers of £10million for English defender Nat Phillips ahead of the January window. That has sunk from £15million, and Steven Gerrard has got to be on red alert.
Back in the summer, 24-year-old Phillips was handed a £15million price tag (). Recently, reported that a fee of £12million might tempt the Reds. Now, say £10million will be enough.
It is a bargain fee for a defender that excelled last season. He played 20 times in all competitions, as the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip suffered injuries. New signings came in, but Phillips was the best option.
Now, with van Dijk and Gomez back, and Ibrahima Konate signed – he is surplus to requirements. That is, despite stunning performance in the San Siro recently. £10million is certainly cheap for Phillips.

So, Gerrard has got to raid Liverpool and take Phillips to Villa, right?
Aston Villa do have options at centre-back. Under Steven Gerrard, they have been playing with a back four – Ezri Konsa alongside Tyrone Mings. Kortney Hause and Axel Tuanzebe are back-up options.
But Tuanzebe is only on loan and is some way off Konsa and Mings. Similarly, Hause is hardly the best option – signed when Villa were still in the Championship. Konsa and Minga need proper competition.
They need to be kept on their toes so they can remain at the top of their game. Mings was dropped earlier in the season, with criticism coming his way. At £10million, Phillips has got to be considered.
While he would not start, he would instantly be breathing down the necks of Villa’s preferred two. As soon as one drops out, there is no reason why he might not do enough to retain his place. Gerrard must be on red alert.
