Steven Gerrard hails ‘leader’ Filip Helander who guided Rangers to victory on Sunday
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has stressed the importance of Filip Helander’s leadership and experience, .
Helander scored a late header for Rangers to seal a narrow victory over Motherwell on Sunday. The towering centre-back’s 80th-minute winner meant Rangers are level on points with table-toppers and bitter rivals Celtic after 10 matches.
Gerrard has not always used Helander this season, due to an ankle issue and some tactical decisions. But he has been impressed with the Sweden defender when called upon.
Gerrard on Helander

After the win at Ibrox, Gerrard said (): “I think he has shown great leadership. He had a little bit of an ankle issue before the international break and never played for Sweden.
“I decided to go with Katic at Hearts for the real physicality of Ikpeazu and then use Fil’s experience and leadership away to Porto, which I knew was going to be more of a technical game. One that needed experience. He did ever so well over in Portugal and today he has stepped up and been a leader again. I’m delighted with what he’s done this week.”
TBR’s view
In the space of one week, Helander has gone from sitting on the bench to being a Gers hero. The 26-year-old has all the ingredients to become a fan favourite at Ibrox with his passion, physicality, aerial threat and dedication.
If he can continue to perform at a high level, Helander gives Gerrard a selection headache. But the Rangers defence is now looking strong with plenty of depth too.
