Steven Gerrard has underlined his delight when speaking to after the Gers announced the signing of free agent Leon Balogun on an initial one-year contract.
Balogun, 32, becomes the Gers’ fourth summer signing after Gerrard completed a permanent deal for Ianis Hagi – as well as moves to sign Calvin Bassey from Leicester City and Jon McLaughlin from Sunderland.
Nigeria international Balogun saw his contract at Premier League side Brighton expire at the end of June, though he extended his loan spell at Wigan Athletic until the Championship campaign finished earlier this week.
A free agent, Balogun has signed for Rangers in a deal that sees him initially agree a move until next summer – with Rangers boasting the opportunity to extend that by another 12 months. Gerrard is delighted.

“I am pleased to secure the signature of Leon,” . “He is an experienced centre half who will add strength and depth to our squad. Leon has just finished a round of competitive fixtures so will hit the ground running.
“His experience in the Premier League as well as his international pedigree strengthens our squad and will assist our young defenders. He’s a positive and bright character and we are looking forward to his influence around the group.”
Balogun has seemingly been brought to the club after Niko Katic suffered a long-term injury that is expected to keep the Croatian sidelined for the majority of the 2020-21 campaign.
Balogun is expected to be used as cover for Connor Goldson, George Edmondson and Filip Helander. Rangers kick off their 2020-21 campaign with a trip to Pittodrie on Saturday, August 1.
