Steven Gerrard explains why Leeds spell can help Kemar Roofe at Rangers

that Kemar Roofe’s spell at Leeds United will help the attacker thrive at Ibrox – after the Gers confirmed a move to sign the Birmingham-born striker on Tuesday.

Roofe, 27, has put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Ibrox after the Gers agreed a £4million () fee with Anderlecht for the striker. It comes after Roofe endured a difficult spell in Belgium alongside Vincent Kompany.

The former West Brom man managed just 16 appearances following his move from Leeds in the summer of 2019, and although he scored seven goals and created three assists – Anderlecht decided to sell due to his injuries.

But it was his Leeds spell that Gerrard is confident will help Roofe at Ibrox. Signed from Oxford United by Garry Monk in 2016, Roofe played for a Leeds side that had huge expectations of promotion.

A club the size of Leeds has huge demands and Roofe had to deal with that during his three-year stay, in which he clocked up 122 appearances and scored 33 goals – despite playing out wide and in the 10 role, more than up front.

“He has experienced the pressure and expectation at Leeds United and has played on the continent which will stand him in good stead for his time at Ibrox,” Gerrard told the Gers’ official site.

Rangers are next in action against Bayer Levekusen and Roofe has not been named in the Gers side to take on the Germans this week. However, his debut could come against St. Mirren at Ibrox on Sunday.
