Steven Gerrard confirms Rangers plans to keep Steven Davis, Jermain Defoe and Allan McGregor
Steven Gerrard has revealed that three of Rangers’ most experienced professionals are locked in contract talks, .
Rangers veterans Steven Davis, Jermain Defoe and Allan McGregor are discussing extensions. Gerrard has emphasised the importance of combining senior pros with the youngsters and he values these three players highly.
Defoe is a free-scoring striker who rotates well with Alfredo Morelos. He is an exemplary professional but he is only on loan from Bournemouth. Gerrard could hand the 37-year-old a player-coach deal.
Davis rejoined Rangers from Southampton at the same time as Defoe. The Northern Ireland international is still a regular starter despite his age. Rangers midfielders will learn a lot from the 34-year-old.
Meanwhile, McGregor continues to retain the starting spot between the sticks for the Gers. The 37-year-old keeps Wes Foderingham on the bench and will hope to end his playing days at Rangers.
Gerrard on contract talks
Gerrard said (): “The people I’m talking about are the likes of Jermain, Allan, Steven — they’re not on long-term deals but are very much in the plan. They are on top form and players we want around longer than the end of the season.
“I don’t look at age. I look on form, I look on what you offer, what your contribution is on a daily basis. What you are bringing to the team and what you are potentially bringing to the team over how many years we are talking.
“I think when you’re dealing with players of this age, you’re never going to offer them a two or three-year deal. But at the same time you don’t want to lose them because they’re so valuable to us.
“They are players who help drive the standards and drive the dressing room and are helping me on a daily basis. Can you imagine how difficult my job would be now if those three were leaving in the summer?”
TBR’s view
All three players are valuable members of the squad. Not only are they all playing regular football at Ibrox but they also offer invaluable experience and mentoring to the younger players.
While they are still able to compete for first-team spots, it is imperative to keep them at the club. Davis, Defoe and McGregor can help to lead Rangers into a new era before hanging up their boots.
