Steven Gerrard confirms discussions are taking place on Jermain Defoe’s Rangers future
Steven Gerrard has confirmed that the club have opened talks with Jermain Defoe over his future with Rangers, with the striker’s current deal set to expire this summer.
Speaking to the Press Association , the former Liverpool captain confirmed that negotiations between the club and Defoe have begun, with the future of the veteran attacker still in the air following from Rangers’ title-winning season, with the 38-year-old striker making 18 appearances and scoring six goals for the Glasgow side this campaign.
Defoe joined the Scottish giants last summer following a six-month loan spell north of the border from Bournemouth, with the former England international proving to be a useful member of the Rangers squad in the 18 months he has been with the team, and Gerrard confirmed that talks have begun between the player and the club on what the next steps between the two will be.
The Rangers manager said: “It goes without saying that Jermain Defoe is someone I have the ultimate respect and admiration for He’s been a wonderful player. He’s had a wonderful career,” with Gerrard later adding: “We’re in talks with Jermain at the moment about what’s next for Jermain. But we want to be really respectful, we want to give him the time to make his own decisions.”

At 38, Defoe is reaching the end of an incredible career, but with Rangers set to play in the UEFA Champions League next season for the first time in well over a decade, the former Tottenham attacker could be convinced to stick around for one extra year to taste elite European football once again.
