Steven Bergwijn must kick on for Tottenham after impressive City showing

Tottenham Hotspur are currently top of the Premier League table.

The north Londoners are enjoying a purple patch after an awful opening performance and result against Everton.

Spurs haven’t actually played that well, but there appears to have been a shift in mentality under Jose Mourinho, something Daniel Levy was probably hoping for when he hired the Portuguese.

The manager is getting the most out of the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min son, with plenty of others, like Tanguy Ndombele and Eric Dier, also impressing.

One man who’s had a bit of an indifferent 2020/21 so far though, is Steven Bergwijn.

The 23-year-old made a very lively start to his Spurs career following his £27 million move () from PSV Eindhoven back in January.

But the star failed to nail down a starting place, and was sent home by the Netherlands during the last international break for fitness reasons.

TBR’s View – Bergwijn must kick on from Saturday showing

As he approaches one year at the club, Bergwijn must now seek to reach the next level.

Arguably, he’s had an up and down time so far at the club. He started explosively, but kind of tailed off towards the end of 2019/20, and this term he’s missed out on four Premier League matchday squads.

Recalled to the starting XI on Saturday, his performance against City was good and his hard work did not go unnoticed on social media by Spurs fans.

If Mourinho continues to hand him starts then he must keep performing, especially with the likes of Lucas Moura and Gareth Bale breathing down his neck.
