Steve Nicol urges Liverpool to re-sign Dejan Lovren, or go after a Crystal Palace star

Steve Nicol has told ESPN – – that Liverpool should consider a move to re-sign Dejan Lovren on loan in January from Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg after their centre-back crisis worsened – and even suggested a Crystal Palace defender.

Lovren, 31, ended a six-year spell at Liverpool where he clocked up 185 appearances in all competitions last summer. He completed an £11million () move to Zenit, and has already clocked up 15 outings for the Russian side.

He has impressed at his new club, starting every match – and looked to have held Borussia Dortmund out on Wednesday night, only for Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland to strike in the final stages of the match.

Nicol reckons Liverpool should pursue a potential return for Lovren on loan, while also suggesting Palace giant Mamadou Sakho should be considered as he remains on the fringes at Selhurst Park. He left Liverpool in January 2017 for £26million ().

“We should try and get [Dejan] Lovren back on loan, that could solve the problem, [Mamadou] Sakho’s not getting a game for Palace either,” Nicol told ESPN. “We’re down to Rhys Williams who’s not even a centre-back. It’s backs-to-the-wall time.”

TBR’s view – Lovren return would ease Liverpool woes

And the chances are that Lovren would certainly welcome a return, given he has plenty of close friends at Anfield. What will scupper a move, if Liverpool pursue a deal, is that he is a regular for Zenit and they will hardly let him go.

Unlike Nicol’s claim, Sakho is getting some game time at Palace, starting three of Palace’s six Premier League games. Is the France international and former PSG man good enough to return to Liverpool? He left due to a fall-out with Jurgen Klopp.

If Liverpool had to choose between either player, Lovren would be the better choice. But the Reds need a better defender.
