Stephen Warnock thinks Everton should sign free agent Diego Costa

Diego Costa has reportedly been offered the chance to join a top-six Premier League side until the end of the season as he remains a free agent – and Stephen Warnock has told Sky Sports (Monday, 12.55PM) Everton should make their move.

Costa, 32, is without a club having been released by Atletico Madrid earlier this season. The Spain international managed just seven appearances but had fallen down the pecking order – with Atletico bringing in Luis Suarez in the summer.

He has been linked on numerous occasions with a return to the Premier League, having scored 52 goals in 89 top-flight outings in England during his spell at Chelsea. (Monday, 12.05) claim he has an offer on the table from a top-six side.

The report claims Costa want £13million over the next two and a half years, and ex-Liverpool man Warnock thinks that Everton should really consider a move for the powerhouse striker – as there is little competition for Dom Calvert-Lewin.

“When you look at his wages, you’re talking about a top-six team,” Warnock said. “Everton spring to mind. You’ve got Calvert-Lewin but you don’t have much other help with him. I think he would be a really good signing for Everton.”

TBR’s view – Costa would be a stunning Everton addition

But his wages are enormous. For a player that is believed to be past his excellent best, he still wants wages in the region of £100,000. Given that he would act as cover for Calvert-Lewin, surely that is a move that is not financially viable for Everton.

However, Everton need a striker with Cenk Tosun returning to Besiktas and Moise Keane remaining on loan at PSG. They need a striker and Costa would be a good signing, if they could get him on a shorter-term deal.
