Stephen Warnock heaps praise on Liverpool trio, including new signing Ozan Kabak

Stephen Warnock has raved about three Liverpool players during of his old side’s 2-0 win over RB Leipzig in Hungary on Tuesday night – including new signing Ozan Kabak, and under-fire goalkeeper Alisson.

Second-half goals from Mo Salah and Sadio Mane gave Liverpool control in the first leg of the two-legged tie, which was played in Budapest. The second leg will take place on March 10 at Anfield, with Liverpool expected to qualify.

It was a much-improved Liverpool performance compared to the 3-1 capitulation against Leicester on Saturday. That is, despite Jurgen Klopp making only one change – bringing in Thiago for the injured James Milner.

Ex-Liverpool defender Warnock applauded three players during the win, in which most had a good game. He thinks Alisson was “back to his best”, while new signing Kabak looked solid. He also applauded Mo Salah’s work rate.

On Salah: “Salah has ran himself into the ground, his work rate has been outstanding he’s been a threat constantly down the side. Klopp gives him a huge hug and rightly so because that’s a big performance from a big player.”

On Kabak and Alisson: Good performance from Kabak, he’s defended extremely well, read the danger, sensing it. Confident from Alisson, too. He’s looked confident, assured, back to his best. Hope I haven’t spoke too soon there.”

TBR’s view – A turning point for Liverpool?

It might be too soon to say that. While Liverpool looked much more like the Liverpool we saw last season, they came up against a Leipzig side that made mistake after mistake – looking incredibly sloppy in possession.

Dayot Upamecano seemed to mentally have already joined Bayern. The defender made numerous misplaced passes, while ex-Manchester City man Angelino seemed to provide the only kind of threat – from left-back.

Alisson made a stunning stop to prevent livewire Dani Olmo from scoring at 0-0, but other than that, Leipzig rarely threatened the Merseyside outfit. Everton up next for Liverpool.
