Statistics suggest Liverpool should stick with Naby Keita for Atletico Madrid test

Liverpool extended their lead at the summit of the Premier League to 25 points with a 1-0 win over Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Sadio Mane’s goal saw the Reds move a step closer to claiming their first Premier League title and continued their unbeaten run.

Tomorrow night attention will switch to the Champions League. Liverpool travel to the Wanda Metropolitano to face Atletico Madrid; returning to the scene of last season’s final where the Reds claimed their sixth trophy.

Los Rojiblancos sit 13 points behind their city rivals Real Madrid and they will view the Champions League as a somewhat welcome distraction.

Despite their struggles with inconsistency and a pretty bleak injury list, Simeone’s team could still prove a tough nut to crack.

One man who will be hoping to earn another start on Tuesday is midfielder Naby Keita.

The 25-year-old played the full 90 minutes in Saturday’s win and divided opinion with his performance.

The statistics proved that those slagging off his performance didn’t really have a valid point.

Keita completed 76% of his passes, two out of three dribbles, won two out of three headers and won all five of the tackles he attempted.

Essentially Keita did the job that he is paid to do and that hasn’t been seen often enough since he arrived at Anfield.

Consistency

The midfielder has only played eight league games this season and there have been some questions raised over what is role is within Jurgen Klopp’s team.

Of course, that is for the manager to decide but all he can do is grasp his opportunities when they do come along.

Tomorrow night, Keita will be tasked with stifling the threat of Atletico’s star man, Koke and his midfield partner in crime Thomas Partey.

Given how good he was on Saturday, he will surely get another chance to shine.

Keita is on at Anfield and after costing £48 million , it’s fair to say he must start contributing more.

Saturday showed what he can bring to the table and even if the supporters still didn’t rate him, the statistics certainly don’t lie.

Against such a calm and composed midfield, the tenacious Guinean might be the ideal man for Klopp to deploy tomorrow night.
