Statement of intent as Celtic reportedly beat Southampton in race for David Turnbull

Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull is heading to Celtic, . Celtic are set to fend off interest from other clubs to land Turnbull.

The highly-rated young midfielder impressed last season, winning Motherwell’s Player of the Season accolade. And now he is close to securing a £3m move to Celtic.

Talks had broken down over personal terms, allowing some other clubs to enter the race. This included Southampton and Bristol City, .

With an English Premier League side in the race, Celtic might have given up hope. Turnbull would earn more at Southampton and have the chance to play against some top teams.

But Celtic look like they have won this transfer battle. And this is a major statement of intent, especially considering their previous transfer interaction with Southampton.

Last summer, Southampton lured Celtic star Stuart Armstrong down from Parkhead to the south coast of England. He signed a four-year deal with the Saints.

But now, Celtic have beaten Southampton to sign Turnbull. This shows that the Bhoys still have pulling power, especially with Scottish players.

TBR’s view

Turnbull could be a future star at Celtic. And he will be coming in with an immediate view to playing first-team football.

After scoring 16 goals in 34 games last season, the 19-year-old is set for a big future. Celtic have made sure he will be their player and Turnbull could prove to be a statement signing.
