Stan Collymore confidently predicts where Manchester United will be in five years’ time under Ruben Amorim

Manchester United have begun a new era, with Ruben Amorim taking the reins permanently from Erik ten Hag.

The Portuguese manager took over at Old Trafford during the November international break after Ruud van Nistelrooy had steadied the ship.

Amorim has two games under his belt for Manchester United so far, claiming a 1-1 Premier League draw with Ipswich Town in his debut and then beating Bodo/Glimt 3-2 in the Europa League.

Now, Stan Collymore has made a confident prediction over where the Red Devils will be in five years’ time under Amorim.

Stan Collymore says people will ‘be aghast’ when seeing Ruben Amorim’s first Manchester United XI in five years’ time

Collymore, writing on , said he feels Amorim will have assembled a solid squad that can compete for the Premier League title and the Champions League once again.

The pundit did stress that this would be dependent on “the wind in his sails” and the right support from the new Man United recruitment structure.

However, Collymore seems confident that this will be the case, and predicted that, in five years’ time, people will wince at his debut starting XI for the club.

“I think that we’ll look back in five years and say this was Ruben Amorim’s first XI that he played as Man United head coach (against Ipswich) and we’ll be aghast when comparing it,” wrote Collymore.

“He will, by then, have assembled a group of young, hungry and experienced players that can create chances, play the way that he wants to play and get to a point of having a Manchester United that can compete for a Premier League title or a Champions League.

“I think that if he has the wind in his sails and the correct support from the new recruitment structure that Manchester United now have, I think he can be successful.”

Who Amorim named in his first Manchester United starting XI

Amorim’s first Man United XI consisted of Andre Onana in goal and Jonny Evans, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui in front of him.

Diogo Dalot, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro and Amad Diallo were in midfield, and Marcus Rashford led the line in front of Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes.

Retrospective line-ups are always interesting to see as, in some cases, they are a million miles away from the current team – sometimes good, sometimes bad.

It remains to be seen what Amorim does in the January transfer window as links begin surfacing between Man United and potential targets.

For instance, Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has reported that Man United are keen on Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen.

Man United are next in action on Sunday 1 December when they host Everton in a Premier League clash at Old Trafford. The game is scheduled to kick off at 1:30pm GMT.
