Stan Collymore apologises to Fabian Delph for calling him a snake back in 2015
Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has used his Sunday People column to apologise to Fabian Delph for his comments about him when he left Aston Villa back in 2015.
Collymore has a deep affection for the Villans, who Delph left for Manchester City before he joined Everton earlier this month.
On Sunday People, page 55, 21/07, Collymore said: “When Fabian Delph left Aston Villa for Manchester City, I dug him out and called him a ‘snake’ – and I don’t mind admitting I was wrong and he was right.
“He left a shell of a club to go and win trophies so he deserves the apology. His move to Everton looks a very shrewd bit of business by Marco Silva and Marcel Brands.”
Delph’s move from Villa was seen at the time as something of a betrayal and a move he was purely making for the money.
Fast-forward to 2019 and Delph has won multiple Premier League titles under a legendary manager in Pep Guardiola and has established himself as a fixture in the England squad.
Meanwhile, Villa sunk down to the Championship and have only just rebounded up into the top flight and while Jack Grealish stuck with the club through that, Delph was well within his rights to make the move.
He has pushed himself to the next level and he was perhaps a player Villa should have been looking at bringing back this summer to add experience, even if his wage and age profile don’t really fit with Dean Smith’s blueprint.
