Staff at club were really shocked when Tottenham made £9m bid for 23-year-old winger in 2019

Ahead of a busy January transfer window for Tottenham Hotspur, one deal from the past is now back in the spotlight once again.

Perhaps Spurs haven’t always been too diligent with their transfers in the last few years, something that is changing since Ange Postecoglou arrived.

That being said, have now shared some information about Jack Clarke’s move to Tottenham from Leeds United back in 2019.

The winger joined Spurs for , but spent the majority of his contract away on loan.

And having secured a permanent move to Sunderland in the summer, his chapter in North London has ended for now.

But harping back to his initial move, this report says that Leeds were actually shocked by the size of Tottenham’s bid.

Leeds considered Clarke to be an exciting talent, but they didn’t value him so highly.

Moreover, Spurs coach at the time, Maurcio Pochettino, was not even said to be too keen on the signing anyway.

Leeds strongly felt they had got the better end of the deal, something that now looks to be proven.

Tottenham need to avoid same mistakes ahead of crucial January transfer window

It does now feel as if things will be different with Ange Postecoglou around.

If Tottenham make use of the January transfer window, fans will imagine any arrivals to be players Postecoglou has signed off.

And therefore, it seems hard to imagine that there will be a repeat of this Jack Clarke situation.

Should Postecoglou sign a young winger for example, there would be a clear path to the first team, and plenty of opportunities.

Had Clarke enjoyed such a plan, he may still be at the club right now.

However, it does seem that Postecoglou could be eyeing a move for a ready-made £25m transfer in January.

It’s a crucial window for Spurs, one that could perhaps be as busy as the summer.

It’s not impossible to think that the likes of Eric Dier, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Hugo Lloris could all leave.

And even without those departures, it seems that Tottenham will look to spend.

It’ll certainly be an exciting month for fans, one in which they should also hopefully recover James Maddison and Micky van de Ven as well.
