St James’ Park insiders believe £20m deadline day signing is still possible for Newcastle United
Newcastle are attempting a late deal to sign Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest – but regardless of whether that move materialises or not, another signing remains possible for the Magpies.
In case you missed it, Newcastle are trying to sign Elanga in a £35m deal as Eddie Howe aims to salvage something from this transfer window – after missing out on Marc Guehi and also failing to sell Miguel Almiron.
Now – however – a £20m signing could arrive at Newcastle United before the 11pm deadline…
Newcastle could still sign James Trafford
A story from now states that Newcastle could still sign James Trafford in a £20m move from Burnley before the 11pm transfer deadline.
The Burnley No.1 was heavily linked with a move to Tyneside at the start of the summer as Howe looked to replace Loris Karius and find stronger competition for Nick Pope.
Since then, Newcastle have signed Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest to bolster the goalkeeping department – as well as John Ruddy – meaning the Magpies now have five goalkeepers at St James’ Park, with Mark Gillespie also at Newcastle.
So, why would Newcastle sign Trafford?
Interestingly, iNews state that Newcastle insiders still want to line up an heir to Pope’s throne for the right price before the 11pm deadline, as it is believed those within St James’ Park do not see Vlachodimos, Dubravka, Ruddy or Gillespie as long-term goalkeeping options.

In fact, sources have told TBR Football that Newcastle ideally want to offload two goalkeepers before. the transfer window closes, including Vlachodimos – who only arrived from Nottingham Forest in June.
Magpies should consider repeating Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow move
There is no point signing Trafford for him to sit on the bench behind Pope this season, although the 21-year-old is still a top goalkeeping prospect who could easily take his value far beyond £20m with a strong season in the Championship.
Therefore, Newcastle should look to repeat the manner in which they signed Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow from Nottingham Forest back in August 2014.

If you do not recall, the Magpies signed the duo and then loaned them back to the City Ground, where they developed their skills before an opening emerged in the first-team back at St James’ Park.
A similar move, in which Trafford is signed for £20m before being handed back to Burnley on loan, would make sense, even more so seeing as Dubravka, Ruddy and Gillespie all see their contracts expire next summer.
