Spurs target Depay is in talks to leave Barcelona on free – Romano

Tottenham Hotspur may not have to worry about paying any kind of transfer fee if they want to sign Memphis Depay this summer, with Fabrizio Romano that the forward is now in talks to leave Barcelona on a free.

Depay is on the verge of being forced out of Camp Nou this summer. He actually finished his first season with the Catalan giants as their top goalscorer. But he never quite managed to make himself indispensable.

Xavi has since added Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha to his ranks. Meanwhile, Ousmane Dembele has signed a new contract. And with that, Depay has fallen to the periphery of the squad.

That has reportedly prompted Tottenham to make an offer for the Dutchman. Barcelona were open to considering bids of £16.7 million for the 28-year-old.

Reports then claimed that Barca were prepared to slash his asking price to boost the chances of a move. But it seems that they could now take an even more drastic step.

Romano has reported on Twitter that Depay is now in talks to leave Barcelona on a free transfer. He will however, only go if he can secure an offer from a top club.

You would imagine that a number of sides would jump at the chance to make a move if Depay becomes a free agent. He is a ‘‘ forward who should be at the peak of his career.

Tottenham meanwhile, may not be done in the market. So you would think that there will be discussions behind the scenes regarding whether they should make an offer for the Dutchman.

But Depay will also be aware that a free transfer could be particularly lucrative to him personally. He will surely want his wages or signing-on fee to be higher with clubs not having to pay a transfer fee.

Having said that, Depay wants to play for a top team. So he may also need to be prepared to compromise.
