Spurs player who’s currently struggling would absolutely thrive if Gasperini becomes manager – TBR View
Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a new permanent manager continues after Jose Mourinho was sacked by Spurs just over a fortnight ago.
A number of coaches have been linked with the Tottenham vacancy, the latest of which is Gian Piero Gasperini.
According to Duncan Castles on The Transfer Window , Spurs have already made contact with the Atalanta head coach.
The 63-year-old has been at the club since since 2016 and turned a previously modest Serie A outfit into one of the best teams in the country.
In the two seasons prior to Gasperini’s appointment, Atalanta finished 17th and 13th respectively in the league.
Since his arrival, they’ve finished fourth, seventh and third twice, while this season they’re still in with a great chance of finishing second.
In addition, he’s enjoyed a number of impressive cup runs, including last season when they reached the Champions League quarter-finals.
Gasperini favours a 3-4-3 formation, and energetic overlapping attacking wing-backs are a big part of his system, which is great news for one Spurs player in particular.
Matt Doherty made a big name for himself at Wolves as an attacking wing-back, one of the best in the league.
This earned him a move to Spurs, but former boss Jose Mourinho usually deployed him as a conventional right-back, which hasn’t worked at all.
Doherty is not a bad player at all, it’s just that he’s been used incorrectly – but under Gasperini, who makes the most of attacking wing-backs, he would absolutely thrive.
Likewise, Sergio Reguilon and Ryan Sessegnon, two attacking left-backs who can also be pushed further up the flank, would also benefit from the veteran Italian’s tactics.
