Spurs leading race for £30m attacker who once said he supports Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly frontrunners in the race to sign a player who once said Arsenal are a team he supports.

recently reported that Spurs are above all other clubs in pursuit of Genoa and Iceland attacker Albert Gudmundsson.

The 26-year-old, who has been linked with Tottenham for a number of months now, actually turned down a move to Arsenal in his teens.

In an interview with from 2018, the reported Spurs target admitted it was a difficult decision as he sought a quick route to first-team football.

“It was difficult [to turn down Arsenal],” said Gudmundsson, then at PSV Eindhoven.

“I think my decision to go to Holland was more because I would get more quickly into the first team here.

“I went on trial at both Liverpool and Arsenal. Had a really good time there in England but, in the end, it was me being realistic about where I would get the most playing time.

“Arsenal are a team I support though, it was such a difficult decision. I was thinking about it for a while, I was 16 at the time and my family helped me with my decision.

“I think I took the right decision still, but you never know, we will see at the end of my career if I was wrong.”

Now in his prime years, it looks as though Gudmundsson made the right call, as speculation continues to do the rounds over a prospective Premier League move.

From PSV, he went to AZ Alkmaar and then Genoa, where he now plies his trade.

Gudmundsson has been on fire this season, with 11 goals and three assists from 24 club outings in all competitions.

This has put him in the sights of several Premier League clubs, such as Tottenham, Aston Villa and West Ham. He reportedly has a £30million price tag.

However, considering Gudmundsson likes Arsenal – or at least he once did – could he be swayed if the Gunners start being linked with him?
