‘Spurs are waiting’: Tottenham are now ready to pounce and sign ‘world-class’ player – journalist
Tottenham are now waiting in the wings to sign Netherlands defender Stefan de Vrij from Inter Milan.
The Dutchman’s contract situation is coming to a head and Spurs are waiting to hear if he will sign a new one.
His current deal runs out at the end of the season, meaning that Spurs may be able to organise a cut-price deal in January.
Alternatively, they could sort out a pre-contract agreement and get him for nothing ahead of next season, when Clement Lenglet’s loan deal will have ended.

Tottenham waiting on de Vrij
Journalist Dean Jones told Give Me Sport: “He’s a contender, we’d have to wait and see.
“Spurs are waiting really. Inter have offered him a new contract and at the same time, they’re being offered players of their own in case the player does leave.”
De Vrij has been described as a defender by Spurs boss Antonio Conte but did not see a minute of action at the World Cup as the Netherlands were knocked out in the quarter-finals.
The likes of Nathan Ake were preferred to him, which may alarm some Spurs fans but we all know international football pecking orders can depend on other factors too.
Louis van Gaal may have preferred Ake’s pace or just thought he offered a better balance in his back three; it does not mean de Vrij is not good enough to play for Spurs.
Conte knows him well from his time at Inter and a bargain deal would be common sense for Spurs, who will be hoping he turns down the offer of a new contract at San Siro.
