Spurs and West Ham on alert with Middlesbrough resigned to losing Djed Spence

Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United have received a boost in their pursuit of Middlesbrough youngster Djed Spence, the Championship side are resigned to losing the right-back this summer.

Spence has made 20 appearances in the second tier this season. And it is no surprise to see a host of Premier League clubs track his development with boss Neil Warnock recently comparing the 19-year-old with two of the country’s best in his position.

“If you look at one or two of the full-backs that are around now — the lad at Liverpool, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the lad at Manchester United from Palace [Aaron Wan-Bissaka] — they are all the same type as Djed,” he said, .

“He does have enormous ability, and when you’ve got ability like that it’s criminal if you don’t get to the very top. But as I said to him in that first couple of weeks, he’ll only have himself to blame if he doesn’t get to the very top.”

The report suggests that Boro hope to hold onto Spence for another season. However, they seem to have accepted that he is likely to be on the move this summer.

ESPN claims that Spurs and West Ham want Spence. Brighton, Southampton, Burnley and Sheffield United are also monitoring the teenager.

It is suggested that Boro are looking for around £10 million for the starlet.

TBR View: Spence could replace Kyle Walker-Peters

ESPN notes that Tottenham are ready to let Kyle Walker-Peters leave this summer. So it would appear that Jose Mourinho is eyeing Spence as his potential replacement.

It would be a big ask to expect Spence to immediately push for Serge Aurier’s spot. But his form in the Championship arguably hints that he is ready to be an understudy at the highest level.

However, if Warnock is right about his potential, perhaps it may not be too long before Spence is capable of becoming a key player in the top flight.
