Spurs ace suggests £70k-a-week teammate needs pressure to thrive, shone in last game

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Moussa Sissoko has spoken highly of his side’s strength in depth, suggesting Serge Aurier has shone with a “bit of pressure”.

Spurs strengthened their ranks at right-back over the summer by bringing Matt Doherty in from Wolves for a reported .

Aurier, who was first choice in that position last season, has made just one Premier League appearance so far this term, against Manchester United last time out.

The 27-year-old put in a superb display at Old Trafford, registering one goal and one assist en route to a wonderful 6-1 win.

“That’s Serge’s character and if you want to have the best of someone, you need to put a bit of pressure on him, and that’s what we have now, a strong squad,” Sissoko told the Spurs .

“You can see in every position, two, three or four players. You have to give 100 percent in every training session, in every game and that’s also good because if someone is tired, someone else can play and it won’t affect the team.

“This will help everyone as a player, as a team, as a squad. It will be good for everyone.”

Aurier came in for some criticism last season from sections of the Spurs fanbase, but he answered his critics in style with a superb display against the Red Devils last time out.

With added competition and his first-team place no longer guaranteed, the £ ace has staked a claim for a starting berth once again, but Doherty will be snapping at his heels no doubt.

And with more competition throughout the squad, this will have a positive knock-on effect on all players – and it’s showing already.
