Sporting director shares what he’s now doing to stop £100m Liverpool-linked player from leaving

Liverpool had a quiet summer transfer window, yet rumours since the closure of the market seem to suggest that January could be busy for the Reds.

Loic Bade has emerged as a target for Liverpool with Arne Slot’s side yet to reach agreements on new contracts for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, with the trio all currently set to leave for free at the end of the season.

With the Reds signing just two players in the summer, there’s a real chance that Liverpool could go big in January depending on where the Anfield side are in both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League standings.

And a sporting director has now shared how he’s planning to keep hold of a star player linked with Liverpool.

Napoli working to hand Liverpool-linked Khvicha Kvaratskhelia a new contract

Speaking to , Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna revealed that discussions are taking place with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and his agents to extend his contract with the Serie A side.

Kvaratskhelia was linked with Liverpool this summer with the £100m-rated Georgia international still regarded as one of the most exciting attacking prospects in all of Europe having led Napoli to the 2023 Serie A title.

Yet Kvaratskhelia could now end up staying at Napoli if an agreement can be reached over a new contract, with the Italian side at work to keep their star attacker on their books after a strong start to the season under new manager Antonio Conte.

Manna said when asked about Kvaratskhelia’s future: “He’s still under contract for the next three years. There were clubs interested in Kvara but we wanted to continue together. We’re now working with his agents to extend the contract.”

Liverpool might now not have a need to sign Kvaratskhelia

Having signed Federico Chiesa this summer with Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo also capable of playing out on the left-wing, Liverpool signing Kvaratskhelia in 2025 feels like an unnecessary luxury.

With the Reds likely to see one of Alexander-Arnold, Salah or Van Dijk leave next year, as well, Liverpool know they need to keep some funds in reserve to pull off a major signing for a key position in the summer transfer window of 2025.

And in the case of Kvaratskhelia, the winger doesn’t fit into any of the boxes Liverpool might need filling, with the left-wing position the strongest the Reds have in their current squad.
