Sporting director comments on future of Celtic and Rangers-linked Dejan Ljubicic
Rapid Vienna sporting director Zoran Barisic has told that the Austrian side are desperate to keep a hold of midfielder Dejan Ljubicic – amid reported interest from both Celtic and Rangers, as well as English clubs.
Ljubicic, 22, has appeared on the radars of both title-chasing Scottish sides after an impressive 2019-20 campaign. Ljubicic has now clocked up 100 appearances in all competitions after breaking through the Rapid academy.
An Austria Under-21 international, Ljubicic can play in defence or holding midfield but has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Rapid. The Mail claim Brentford and Southampton also want the £2million-rated ace.
Ljubicic, who almost joined MLS side Chicago Fire in January only for injury to scupper a deal, scored against Rangers in the Europa League in 2018. Sporting director Barisic stated that Rapid want to keep Ljubicic.
“I hope so,” Barisic said. “Anything can happen. There is currently no concrete offer, only loose inquiries. There will be no emergency sales. The economic situation is challenging, but I would be stupid to put price tags on my players.”

TBR’s view – Ljubicic a bargain at just £2m
Given his age, versatility and even his ability to chip in with the odd goal or assist, Ljubicic is a no-brainer at such a bargain price for either Celtic or Rangers. His Europa League experience also holds him in good stead.
Winning the race for Ljubicic – whether Celtic or Rangers do so – would prove a big scalp against the other side and could prove crucial in Celtic’s pursuit of 10 in a row.
