Sporting CP fans make one thing very clear to Arsenal about Viktor Gyokeres as £64m deal finally announced

Arsenal have finally completed the £64m signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP.

The saga had dominated the entirety of the summer transfer window for Arsenal fans as negotiations between Andrea Berta – who also considered Benjamin Sesko – and the Portuguese giants dragged on for weeks.

After a stunning haul of 97 goals in 102 games in Lisbon since his move from Coventry in July 2023, the signing of Viktor Gyokeres is an exciting one for Arsenal – and one thing has now been made abundantly clear by Sporting CP fans online.

Arsenal told they have signed one of the best players in the history of Sporting CP

The Sweden international has upset some Sporting CP fans by the manner in which he departed, but despite his actions, many are still hailing the new Arsenal No.14 as one of the best to have played for them.

Gyokeres refused to turn up for training as he pushed to join Arsenal – with his antics criticised by Laurindo Filho, manager of the women’s team at CD Feirense.

Despite this, one Sporting CP fan wrote: “A beautiful story but with an ending that could and should have been different. Here, no one is ungrateful, but nobody is greater than the great Sporting.

“Thank you Viktor, you were one of the best I’ve ever seen with our green and white.”

Another posted: “The greatest player in Sporting’s history, they’ll never make me hate you, king.”

The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Bruno Fernandes have previously played for Sporting CP, so it really does speak volumes to hear some put Gyokeres above the trio.

Furthermore, a third Sporting CP fan commented: “Only two seasons and already striking fear into opponents’ hearts. It was refreshing and so, so much fun.”

Another added: “No player gave me more joy as a Sporting fan than Gyo.”

A fifth Sporting CP supporter even went as far as saying that Gyokeres is the best player they have ever seen in Liga Portugal, posting: “The best player I’ve ever seen at Sporting and Liga Portugal in my lifetime.

“97 goals in 102 games, Sporting’s most important player in the first back-to-back league titles in over 70 years. A disappointing ending doesn’t outweigh the entire story.”

Last but not least, a sixth fondly reminisced about the first time Gyokeres appeared for Sporting CP, writing: “Watching this (footage) is like going back to that first game against Vizela, and only then realising, and right then realising, that we had a powerhouse on the team.

“Hands on head in disbelief, never seen any other like this in this club. everything that happened after that day is the best thing I’ve seen happen here.”

A player who has quite publicly forced an exit to another club seldom receives such warm messages like the ones above, which strongly suggests Mikel Arteta has not only signed a special player, but a unique character as well.

When Viktor Gyokeres is expected to make his Arsenal debut

TBR Football understand Arteta plans to hand Gyokeres his debut against Tottenham in the upcoming friendly in Hong Kong on Thursday 31st July.

Our Chief Correspondent Graeme Bailey can reveal: “Arsenal want Gyokeres with the squad as soon as possible – just to get him integrated.

“He is set to make his debut against their biggest rivals Tottenham, which will be a special occasion for everyone – it is actually working out quite well.

“Arteta has been talking to Gyokeres since last week, getting him up to speed with his tactical mindset and just getting him used to his thinking.”

Should the Swede score on his debut against Tottenham of all clubs, he would become an immediate hero at Arsenal – just like he was at Sporting CP.
