Sporting CP expert now tells Arsenal fans what to expect from Viktor Gyokeres – ‘best player I have ever seen’
The arrival of Viktor Gyokeres is generating real excitement at Arsenal, but there is room for scepticism.
In what is arguably the most concerning example, the likes of Darwin Nunez – now up for sale at Anfield – have struggled to adjust to life in the Premier League despite shining in Liga Portugal.
The Uruguay international sealed a £64m move to Liverpool in June 2022 after bagging 48 goals in 85 games for Benfica, but has managed to score just 40 times in 143 appearances for the Reds.
Rio Ferdinand also has doubts over Gyokeres, saying: “I don’t think he’s the guy.
“I’ve watched him probably three times really, really closely, and three times I’ve gone, he ain’t getting that opportunity in the Prem.”
Now – however – Sporting CP expert Sam Fonseca has exclusively told TBR Football why Arsenal fans should be excited by the signing of Viktor Gyokeres.
Exclusive: Viktor Gyokeres backed to continue sparkling under Mikel Arteta
Fonseca – founder of All Things Alvalade – strongly believes the Sweden international will be a huge success at the Emirates Stadium.
The Sporting CP expert tells TBR Football: “Viktor Gyokeres is the best player I have ever seen at Sporting in my lifetime, and one of the most impactful players I’ve seen in Liga Portugal – on the same level as names like (Radamel) Falcao, Hulk, or Oscar Cardozo.
“Gyokeres didn’t just lift Sporting, he became a phenomenon across Portugal. Even Benfica academy players were copying his celebration when they scored, and that celebration even made its way to the Olympics and international TV.”
Viktor Gyokeres will go down in Sporting CP folklore
Impressively, the Swede not only enjoyed immense individual success in Lisbon, but his goals secured historic titles for Sporting CP.
Fonseca adds: “He has already etched his name into Sporting’s history. Joint-top scorer for the club in the Champions League with six goals in his first season, and a total of 97 goals in 102 games.
“Gyokeres was also a key figure in back-to-back league titles and a Taca de Portugal, something Sporting hadn’t achieved in over 70 years.”
Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka tipped to flourish alongside Viktor Gyokeres
Not only does Fonseca feel the 27-year-old will shine at Arsenal on an individual level, but he also believes the likes of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz will thrive in his presence.
The Sporting CP expert continued: “I’m convinced Gyokeres will thrive under Arteta.
“He’s excellent at holding the ball up, using his strength to shield defenders and set up teammates. At Sporting, his presence helped players like (Francisco) Trincao, Geny (Catamo) and Daniel Braganca have their best goalscoring seasons.
“In Arsenal’s setup, with Odegaard, Saka, Martinelli, and Havertz, who love quick one-touch passing, he could be the perfect link to keep attacks flowing.
“Gyokeres is also a monster on the ball. He can run at defenders with both pace and power, even against tough opposition like (Nicolas) Otamendi and Antonio Silva (Benfica), Pepe (Porto), Lille, Atalanta, and even Manchester City.
“In transitions, with Saka or Martinelli breaking wide, he can either finish the move or carry the attack himself.”
Fonseca also feels Gyokeres – who is expected to make his debut against Tottenham on 31st July – will contribute to the industrial side of the game for Arsenal, adding: “Defensively, he’s just as valuable.
“Arteta’s press is structured and needs a striker who knows when to lead it.
“Gyokeres is relentless, he presses with intelligence and energy from the first second to the 90th minute.
“Arsenal have – at times – struggled to turn their dominance into goals, especially in tight games as (Gabriel) Jesus or Havertz aren’t natural finishers.
“Gyokeres could be the answer, a striker who combines smart link-up play with raw strength and deadly finishing.”
