‘Special’ £25m midfielder has turned down the chance to move to Tottenham this month

Tottenham reportedly made an approach to sign Royal Antwerp midfielder Arthur Vermeeren, though the teenager turned down the proposal.

The 18-year-old prospect has been chased by the majority of Europe’s biggest clubs this January, with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United all linked with the £25m-rated Vermeeren.

And Tottenham have also been in the mix, with the north London side reportedly scouting Vermeeren as the midfielder starred for Antwerp in the UEFA Champions League.

However, , the Belgian wonderkid turned down an approach from Tottenham, with Vermeeren believing he isn’t ready yet for the Premier League.

With the report stating that the teenager is set to join Atletico Madrid, a move to Spain could be ideal for Vermeeren before making the move to England, and potentially Tottenham.

Indeed, the midfielder is making a rather mature decision in option to head to La Liga rather than the Premier League, and Tottenham could still come back in later years to sign the Belgian if he develops.

At 18, it’s easy to forget just how young Vermeeren actually is considering how much the midfielder has been in the spotlight as one of Antwerp’s star players.

And for Tottenham, Vermeeren’s youth could come at an advantage, especially with the midfielder heading to a top club like Atletico this January.

Moreover, with the La Liga side often open to selling for the right price, there’s a real chance that Tottenham could make a renewed attempt to sign the teenager in the years to come.
